Birth
So far, no confirmed birth records have been found for Marion. Based on the 1841 Scotland Census (see below), Marion was born about 1764 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Although no marriage record for Marion and James Vernon has been found, their first child was baptised in 1785, so assuming they married in 1784-5, this would make Marion a 20-year old bride—which was a normal age to be married.
Searches of church records in Scotland around the time have found a few possible matches for a Marion Nae (including other variants of the surname) around this time in Kirkcudbrightshire[Figure 1]. However, there has been no evidence found that can provide a strong link to any of these as being the same person.

Death
At this time, no further records have been found for Marion following the 1841 Scotland Census. It is likely that she dies in Scotland before the 1851 census, however no matching death or burial records have been found in either the church or statutory registers for Scotland.
A distant possibility could be that Marion remarried, and a Marion Vernon[3] did marry Peter Kinnon on 1 August 1843 at Kirmabreck Parish Church in Creetown. However, this couple had a child named David in 1845, which rules out this being a late-in-life remarriage for Marion Nae.
Other Records
The statutory death registration of Marion’s son David Vernon in 1862 records both Marion Vernon (maiden surname Nay, deceased) and her husband James Vernon (Master Mariner, deceased) as David’s parents. David was also living in Bell’s Wynd, Creetown at the time of the 1861 census and when he died.
In 1879, youngest son Samuel’s statutory death registration also records his parents as James Vernon (sailor, deceased) and Marion Vernon (maiden surname Nay, deceased).
Additional Records
- Baptism, James Vernon, 16 September 1785 - James Vernon's birth was registered in the Kirkmabreck Parish Church registers in 1785. The date given is 16 September 1785, however as there were no standards for record keeping in Scotland's parish church registers, it is not clear whether this is the birth date, baptism date or simply the date that the birth was recorded.
