SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A RAILWAY GUARD.

POLICE STATION.—Friday.
Before Mr. James Osborne, J.P.

George Bull, a goods-guard in employment of the North Stafford Railway Company, and living at Union-street, Ashbourne, was charged with the unlawful possession of a quantity of potatoes, the property of the company.

Inspector Arms, of the railway detective department, had charge of the case.

Evidence was given by Constable Mellor to the effect that he met the man coming along near the churchyard on Monday night. He was carrying a bag containing potatoes, and when asked to explain their possession he said he had bought then from a man, but witness said he was not satisfied with this statement, and took the property away from Bull, who in consequence of further enquiries was subsequently arrested. The potatoes, witness added, were of the same description as some which had been missed from the railway company's premises.

A remand was now asked for, and was granted, Bull, who was in uniform, being meanwhile admitted to bail.
